While the digital versions of Harry Potter appear on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, they can only be bought from Pottermore, allowing Rowling to keep most of the revenue rather than working through publishers. Pottermore, Rowling’s online bookstore, could prove to be a model for authors and publishers to sell their product directly to consumers. As this article on Idealog suggests, JK Rowling is the literary equivalent of The Beatles. Rowling is the only author thus far to have dictated her terms to the book retail industry. Depending on the chosen file type, the eBooks, once downloaded, can be moved between devices and can be read anywhere conveniently. The digital book files, against industry standards, do not have DRM anti-piracy encryption nor are they locked down to a specific device. That works out to about R65 and R90 respectively. The first three eBooks in the series are currently selling for £4.99 while the other four are selling for £6.99 each. The books are downloadable to all leading eReaders, tablets, smartphones and MP3 Players. That means the eBooks and digital audio books by Rowling are now available – including in South Africa – from the website. Rowling has been making news headlines this week with her website’s new online store at, the only home of Harry Potter eBooks.
